We journey far back in time on this tour to a land of stone circles, burial chambers and hill forts. Our journey of discovery includes Stonehenge, Old Sarum Castle, Salisbury Cathedral and the huge stone circles at Avebury.

Heading west into the chalk downland of Wiltshire, we begin our day at one of the oldest inhabited sites in England, Old Sarum where the ancient hill fort has borne witness to layers and layers of British history. From Celts and Romans through to Saxons and Normans, all have left their mark on this special site. We tour the Iron Age fortifications before a guided tour of the 11th century castle then admire the spectacular views down the Avon Valley towards the city of Salisbury, our next destination.

A short drive will take us to the magnificent 13th century Salisbury Cathedral with the tallest spire in the country. Our guide will give you a tour of the interior and point out the oldest working clock in Europe and the best preserved example of this country''s major constitution, Magna Carta dating from 1215. There will be plenty of time to explore the city as well as the cathedral before lunch.

We will meet up again and take the backroads over to Stonehenge. Our route through the Woodford Valley will takes us through pleasant villages of thatch and flint with beautiful gardens and gentle rolling hills. Arriving on the horizon and standing before us, as it has done for thousands of years, we eventually come across Stonehenge. Here, our guide will tell of the mysteries, the theories and the facts of this most enigmatic of sites. We learn of the different building periods, the alignments and the people that worshipped here. You will have time to absorb its powerful presence before we continue to other Stone Age sites in the area.

A short climb will takes us up to West Kennet Longbarrow, a five and a half thousand year old burial chamber which we actually go inside. We can view Silbury Hill, Europe''s tallest prehistoric structure and walk among a landscape positively brimming with the remains of the ancient peoples that lived here.

Our final spectacular site is the stone circles at Avebury. Sixteen times larger than Stonehenge, this historic location has over a hundred standing stones and a circumference so large that the village of Avebury, with it''s thatched cottages and village pub lie right inside. We end our tour within these ancient stones and within this tranquil English village before our return to London.
