Tour inspiration

When it’s your first time visiting Scotland, it’s hard to know exactly what to see so knowing what you’re interested in helps us help you! Do you like castles, whisky, history, culture, beautiful scenery? Here are a few sample itineraries to get you thinking:

Touch of the Highlands Tour from Edinburgh

Your specially chosen guide will meet you at your accommodation in Edinburgh and your Highland Experience begins!

We will travel north of Edinburgh to Crieff and Glenturret Distillery, where you can opt to do a tour and tasting – they have a delicious range of single malt whiskies!

Further north, we enter the Sma’ Glen and all of a sudden you’ll know that you have arrived in the Highlands as the countryside takes on a much more imposing character.

The Hermitage is a beautiful National Trust site on the banks of the River Braan. This is the perfect spot for a leafy walk through stunning countryside. See Ossian’s Cave and Ossian’s Hall, a Victorian folly built to honour the immortal band of the Gaels.

On the way back, we stop for coffee at Dunkeld on the banks of the River Tay. Take a look at its beautiful cathedral and be transported back in time to when Dunkeld was a pocket-sized city and the centre of Scottish Christianity.

We then bring you back to Scotland's capital city to continue your Scottish holiday!

Whisky Tour from Inverness

We will collect you from your hotel and begin your day of whisky adventure!

We take a stunning drive to Glenfiddich Distillery with some photo-stops along the way at the Craigellachie Bridge or Sueno’s stone the largest surviving Pictish stone at over 7 meters high!

We can organise a public or private tour at Glenfiddich depending on your group size and budget. This should last about an hour and a half, they will take you through the full process of whisky making and then you'll get to try some of their delicious drams. We can follow this with lunch in their malt barn bar. Try their haggis and whisky sauce, it very yummy!

We can then pop into the brand new Macallan Distillery for a tasting and look around their impressive visitor centre.

Our day ends with a visit the small, independent Benromach Distillery, very different from the two distilleries you've already seen, this is a perfect end to a day of whisky discovery!

We will then return to Inverness and drop you off at your accommodation.

Day 1

Pick-up at Edinburgh Airport. We'll meet you off your flight at Edinburgh Airport and begin our Scottish adventure. We will journey to Loch Lomond via Stirling. Stopping at impressive viewpoints along the length of Loch Lomond you'll delve into the incredible Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park. There is an option to join a cruise on Loch Lomond and find out more about the islands that dot this loch.

We will also travel through the impressive Glen Coe and Rannoch Moor. Glen Coe is broodingly beautiful and steeped in history. It is in the centre of an extinct volcano which exploded millions of years ago, leaving the rocky mountainous place we see today. Your guide will share the stories of the terrible massacre of Glen Coe that took place here. You’ll learn the parts clans Campbell and MacDonald played in this brutal part of Scottish history.

We will continue to Fort William which will be your overnight stop for the tour

Overnight Fort William - Moorings Hotel

Day 2

Today is all about golf and scenery. We will travel from Fort William to Arisaig to play Golf. The course can lend you clubs so you don't need to worry about bringing your own. To get to Arisaig we pass many incredible sights such as the Glenfinnan Viaduct and monument and the white sandy beaches of Morar.

Overnight Pitlochry: Craigmhor Lodge and Courtyard

Day 3

Our day begins with a visit to one of the smallest distilleries in Scotland, Edradour Distillery, for a tour and tasting. It really cements the idea that great things come in small packages. We will then travel to St Andrews, the home of golf! You will have time to walk the golf course and have a delicious lunch in this pretty coastal town.

On our journey back to Edinburgh we will stop along the way at some quaint fishing villages such as Anstruther or Crail.

Overnight Edinburgh: McDonald Holyrood Hotel

Day 1

We’ll say goodbye to Scotland’s capital Edinburgh and journey to the nearby Black Ness Castle. A perfect viewpoint for the Firth of Forth and often referred to as 'the ship that never sailed', this 15th-century castle stood in for Fort William in Outlander. As you explore this castle at your own pace you may be reminded of Jamie's heart-wrenching incarceration.

Next we’ll visit Linlithgow and Wentworth Prison or Linlithgow Palace; the birthplace of Mary Queen of Scots, you'll have time to wander the grounds of this impressive building and admire its ornate architecture or tour within if you’d prefer. Stirling Castle, one of the largest and most important castles in Scotland, you would need at least 2 hours & lunch time

We continue on to Doune Castle, which plays a starring role in the show; Castle Leoch home of Colum MacKenzie and his clan. You might also remember it from as Castle Anthrax from Monty Python and the Holy Grail. They offer audio guides here, with which you can listen to Jamie as he guides you through his uncle's home.

Just 5 minutes up the road and we’ll find ourselves in France and Jamie's cousin's wine warehouse, actually the former cotton mill, Deanston Distillery. You can have a quick dram of whisky and a look around. There may be time for a tour and tasting if you are interested?

Overnight Loch Lomond – The Inn on Loch Lomond

Day 2

Have a leisurely morning and see some more of Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park. Could join a cruise on the loch to see some of its islands closer up. We will then travel north into the Highlands and visit Glen Coe, which features in Outlander's opening credits. One of the most impressive places in Scotland, you'll be in awe as you stand in this striking glen. We will continue to Fort William where you can visit the West Highland Museum.

Overnight Fort William – Myrtle Bank B&B

Day 3

Join the morning Jacobite Steam Train from Fort William to Mallaig and enjoying one of the most incredible rail journeys in the world. You’ll travel over the Glenfinnan Viaduct which overlooks Loch Shiel and the Jacobite monument. You’ll have a few hours in Mallaig where you can enjoy a seafood lunch and take a walk to enjoy views of the nearby islands.

We’ll join a ferry and make our way to the Isle of Skye.

Overnight Isle of Skye (suggested location: Portree). Portree Hotel or Rosedale Hotel

Day 4

A full day on the Isle of Skye is all about scenery, and your experienced driver-guide will ensure you get the best out of your time here depending on the weather.

I would suggest the Trotternish Ridge, Fairy Glen, Neist Point – as you’ll be in a smaller vehicle you’ll have more freedom than travelling on one of the larger buses.

Overnight Isle of Skye (suggested location: Portree) Portree Hotel or Rosedale Hotel

 Day 5

Morning on Skye

Eilean Donan Castle, at least for photographs from the outside. This is one of Scotland’s most iconic castles. You can also tour this castle if you wish. Then a visit to the world’s most famous loch, Loch Ness. You could also visit the ruin of Urquhart Castle which perches on the loch’s edge. In the afternoon we can visit Culloden Battlefield and Clava Cairns. Approximately 4,000 years old, these are one of Scotland's more impressive sights as you can get up close to the standing stones and burial chambers.

Overnight Inverness – Strathness Guest House

Day 6

We will journey south to the Highland Folk Museum to get a flavour of how Highland people lived and worked from the 1700s up until the 1960s. It was an ideal choice for various period scenes in Outlander.  As we head further south to Fife we will visit the village of Falkland. Here you can relive one of the first scenes of the Outlander series, in which Jamie's ghost looks up at Claire's room. You'll recognise this village as 1940s & 1960s Inverness. You will also have time to visit Falkland Palace if you choose to. Our final stop is Midhope Castle, the external location for Lallybroch, the family home of Jamie Fraser. This 15th-century castle is largely intact outside, but sadly derelict within - so we will have a quick photo stop here before returning to Edinburgh.

We can accommodate any group size!

Our vehicles feature panoramic windows, reclining seats and air conditioning as a standard to make your tour the most comfortable it can be!

The best part about organising tours of Scotland is finding out how our groups get on, and getting photographs from them after their tours. Here are just a few bits of feedback we've had!

“Our group of 10 - 5 adults, 3 seniors, one 7 year old and one 23 month old booked three tours to meet our cruise ship - one in Greenock, one in Invergordon and one in S. Queensferry. I communicated in advance with Clare who was most efficient, accommodating and lovely in assisting in customizing our three tours. If you ever have occasion to book private tours in Scotland, do not hesitate to contact Clare at Highland Experience Tours - she will not steer you wrong! She and her wonderful guides went out of their way to make our Scottish tours full of memories we will cherish always... we will book through them the next time we visit without fail!!!”

Denise, New York

“Having been to Edinburgh in the past, we were looking for something a bit different. As well, since we were coming into South Queensferry on a cruise ship, we were concerned about time and hoped to find a local company that could pick us up port-side rather than in Edinburgh. Simone, with HET, took great care to create a great day for us. Our driver for the day was Fergie. HET not only sends you pick-up information, they send you a picture of your driver. That was really helpful. Fergie talked to us about the schedule, made sure we were enjoying the day, offered interesting commentary, and made adjustments to the itinerary to accommodate our requests. For a private, 2 person tour, this was a great value.”

Cheryl, Texas

“I will be the first to admit that I am a demanding customer. . .but these folks came through brilliantly in my estimation from inquiry to booking to actual tour.”

Ed, Rapid City

“Highlands tour with Highland Experience Tours was one of the best trips we ever had in terms of service. Flawless, professional, friendly... In case you ever plan a private tour, I highly recommend this team, they are wonderful!!!”

Tuba, Istanbul

“I visited Scotland and took tours with two private drivers (Jamie Stevenson and Stuart Morrison). Both showed us an amazing and unique experience in Scotland and I have already given them glowing reviews on Trip Advisor. But there is one member of the Highland Experience team who makes the world go round and that is Clare who works in the office. My experience with Clare started in March 2017 when I was planning my holiday to Scotland. I had a long list of places and experiences I wanted to do. Clare gave me several options of pre planned tours and then suggested a combination of private drivers and pre planned tours to accommodate our time in Scotland and our budget. Additionally Clare took care of making appointments and coordinating payment at the two distilleries we visited and booked our tickets for us on the Jacobite Steam Train. Clare was instrumental in helping me select our lodging in the cities we were staying. She provided excellent advise on hotels and bed and breakfasts where we were staying and provided us with popular activities, restaurant suggestions and pub suggestions for the evenings when we were on our own. Clare made sure that the drivers had our tickets for all of our activities ahead of time. Additionally she was so kind and patient with me and my never ending questions leading up to my trip. Clare took great care to match me and my group with drivers who were extremely knowledgeable in the history and fun facts about the areas we were visiting. This holiday would not have been half as amazing as it was without the help of Clare. She is truly the unsung hero of Highland Experience! I cannot wait until our next Scottish adventure as I know that Clare again will make it the most enjoyable, relaxing, and memorable experience. Thank you so much Clare for all of your hard work you have done for me and my group!”

This tour is all about Fife and to get there we cross the Firth of Forth - this is your perfect chance to get a photograph of the famous Forth Railway Bridge.

Clare Profile
Clare

“I’ve worked with Highland Experience for over 5 years now. It’s given me the chance to work in an industry I’m incredibly passionate about – travel! I love exploring myself and helping others to experience my home country in the best way possible.

I enjoy creating unique itineraries that take people across the whole of Scotland. I have a special interest in whisky tours (and tastings!) and love to recommend the best places to sleep and eat when touring Scotland. I like to get to know travelers and their interests to ensure we pair them up with the perfect guide for their time exploring Scotland.”

Simone Profile
Simone

“I’ve worked with Highland Experience for just under 2 years and amazingly I’ve had the opportunity to work in various departments of the company. This has given me the opportunity to see different aspects of tours from selling to organising to booking accommodation for clients.

I have a background in event planning so love being able to create private tours for clients and being able to show them what Scotland has to offer. I get so much joy from getting to know my clients, finding out exactly what it is they want from a tour and taking them through the whole process from enquiry to the tour itself. There’s no better satisfaction than receiving a beautiful group shot from a tour that I’ve planned. I love the fact I’ve helped in making someones time in Scotland a memorable one.”
