What to Expect at Edinburgh Christmas Market

East Princes Street Gardens remains the heart of the Christmas Market, with rows of illuminated stalls showcasing a strong mix of Scottish makers, independent traders, and artisan food producers. Over recent years, the majority of vendors have been local or Scottish based, giving the market a strong sense of place and craft.

West Princes Street Gardens continues to focus on family friendly attractions, fairground rides, and relaxed festive experiences, making it ideal for visitors with children or those wanting a quieter pace.

Top Tips for Visiting Edinburgh Christmas 2026

Book your accommodation before your attractions.
Hotels in the city centre often sell out before popular attractions. Once you’ve secured somewhere to stay, you can book experiences like Santa’s Stories, the Big Wheel and Hogmanay tickets.

Visit the market twice.
Go during daylight for shopping and local crafts, then return after dark when the lights come on. The atmosphere is completely different, and the city looks its best once the castle and gardens are illuminated.

Leave room in your suitcase.
Many stalls sell handmade Scottish gifts, whisky, artisan food and Christmas decorations that are difficult to find elsewhere. You’ll almost certainly leave with more than you arrived with.

Wear comfortable waterproof footwear.
You’ll cover far more ground than you expect. Between the Royal Mile, Princes Street, George Street and the Christmas Market, it’s easy to walk several miles in a day, often over cobbled streets.

Book Hogmanay as soon as tickets go on sale.
The Street Party and Torchlight Procession are among Scotland’s most sought after winter events and regularly sell out well before New Year.

Use Edinburgh as your base, not your whole holiday.
One of the biggest advantages of visiting at Christmas is how close the Highlands are. In just a few hours you can swap festive crowds for snow dusted mountains, peaceful lochs and some of Scotland’s most spectacular winter scenery.

Make Your Trip Even More Memorable

After soaking up Edinburgh’s festive atmosphere, head into the Scottish Highlands where winter brings peaceful glens, snow topped mountains and quieter roads.
