From Edinburgh: 4-Day Isle of Skye, Glenfinnan, Fairy Pools & Castle Stay Tour

Edinburgh → Callander → Rannoch Moor → Glencoe → Glenfinnan → Isle of Skye

Leave Edinburgh behind and head deep into the Highlands, where the landscape quickly changes from city streets to mountains, lochs and open wilderness. Stop in Callander, the traditional Gateway to the Highlands, before continuing through vast Rannoch Moor to dramatic Glencoe. Take time to admire the mountains and hear the story of the infamous 1692 massacre that still shapes the glen’s history.

From Glencoe, continue west to Glenfinnan, where you’ll walk to the viewpoint overlooking the famous Glenfinnan Viaduct. The 21-arched railway bridge is instantly recognisable from the Harry Potter films and sits within a landscape that was also central to the Jacobite uprising of 1745. Then it’s onwards to the Isle of Skye. Cross the bridge onto the island and settle in for your first of two nights, ready for a full day of exploring tomorrow.

Old Man of Storr → Kilt Rock → Portree → Talisker Distillery → Fairy Pools → Sligachan

Today is your chance to experience why the Isle of Skye is one of Scotland’s most sought-after destinations. See the Old Man of Storr, Skye’s unmistakable rock pinnacle rising from the Trotternish Ridge. Formed by an ancient landslip millions of years ago, the landscape here feels almost prehistoric. Continue around the Trotternish Peninsula to Kilt Rock and Mealt Falls, where towering cliffs, pinnacles and huge rock formations create some of the island’s most spectacular scenery.

Then it’s on to Portree, Skye’s colourful harbour capital. Stop for lunch and explore the waterfront before heading west to Talisker Distillery, where you can sample whisky from one of the island’s best-known distilleries. The big finish is the Fairy Pools. Follow the trail through Glenbrittle towards a series of crystal-clear pools and waterfalls beneath the Cuillin mountains. The walk is around 2.4km to the pools, with time to explore the landscape and enjoy one of Skye’s most memorable natural sights. On rare occasions, the Fairy Pools may be inaccessible due to weather conditions. If this happens, we’ll explore other stunning parts of Skye instead.

Finish the day at Sligachan, surrounded by the jagged Cuillins and steeped in Highland folklore, before returning to your accommodation.

Overnight: Isle of Skye

Isle of Skye → Eilean Donan Castle → Fort Augustus → Loch Ness → Eastern Highlands → Broomhall Castle

Leave Skye behind and cross back to the mainland, continuing through some of the most spectacular scenery in the western Highlands. Your first stop is Eilean Donan Castle, dramatically positioned on an island where three sea lochs meet. Explore the castle and discover its fascinating history, or simply take in the views and capture photos from outside. Castle entry is optional and available at an additional cost.

Continue to Fort Augustus, sitting at the southern end of Loch Ness. Take time for lunch and explore this historic village on the Caledonian Canal before following the shores of Scotland’s most famous loch. As you head south through the Eastern Highlands, your guide will bring the landscape to life with local stories, history and folklore. Depending on the day’s route, you may also stop in Pitlochry or at a local whisky distillery.

Then comes one of the most unusual parts of the trip: a night in a Scottish castle. Set beneath the Ochil Hills, Broomhall Castle is a 19th-century Scots Baronial mansion with turrets, stonework and views across the surrounding countryside towards the Wallace Monument.

Wallace Monument → Stirling Castle → Bannockburn → The Kelpies → Edinburgh

Your final day takes you into the heart of Scotland’s history, from medieval battles and royal intrigue to one of the country’s most spectacular modern landmarks. Begin at the National Wallace Monument, perched high above Stirling on Abbey Craig. The monument commemorates Sir William Wallace and stands overlooking the landscape where his forces defeated the English at the Battle of Stirling Bridge.

Next, discover Stirling, one of Scotland’s most historic cities, or step inside the magnificent Stirling Castle, perched dramatically above the city on a volcanic crag. The castle was a favourite residence of Scottish monarchs, including Mary Queen of Scots, and played a central role in the country’s history, particularly during the 16th century. Castle entry is optional and available at an additional cost.

Continue to the Battle of Bannockburn, the site of Robert the Bruce’s famous victory over Edward II in 1314, before making your final stop at The Kelpies. Standing 30 metres tall beside the Forth & Clyde Canal, these monumental horse-head sculptures are the world’s largest equine sculptures and a striking tribute to Scotland’s industrial heritage and folklore.

Then sit back and enjoy the final journey through central Scotland before arriving back in Edinburgh in the evening, bringing four days of islands, mountains, castles, history and Highland scenery to an end.

It is always advisable to be prepared for any weather in Scotland so a jacket is always a good idea! A bottle of water for hydration and a camera to capture the spectacular views and you are set to go!

It is not necessary for you to bring your own meals, as we will stop throughout the day in small towns or villages where you can purchase food, however you are more than welcome to bring along snacks or a packed lunch.
